Back in the day the County people boarded Norfolk Southern passenger trains at Butts Station, one of five stations along the railroad, to visit downtown Norfolk for shopping. According to “Chesapeake: A Pictorial History,” further destinations were Centreville, St. Brides, Hickory Ground, and Northwest. This is where many people thing the name came from. But, the Butts Station name actually came from the founding father, Robert Butt. Kind of a funny town name, but it stuck.
